Hi,
since this is the year of experimentation I did a nutty experiment. I could not stop myself from trying to sow peanuts. And it almost worked. Almost! There were a couple of mistakes I made this year that made me realize what I need to add to the garden in the next year to get more crops.
Basically the experiment did work because I did manage to get some peanuts. Just very low number of them.
Why did my nutty experiment fail a bit
These are the reasons for my nutty experiment’s failure:
- I was late in sowing them. And I mean late. They should be sown in may. I sowed them in July. They need warm weather and enough bugs to polinate them.
- And with the bugs we come to point two. There are not enough plants that attract good bugs – polinators – in my garden.
These are all easy to correct. The conclusion of the experiment is: next year I’m planing to put more sweet scented plants to attract bees and try to sow the peanuts in time. Hopefully this will raise the number of peanuts we harvest. The timing is important because peanuts need at least four months to mature in the ground. And plants that attract good bugs are important because without poination there woun’t be any peanut. And for now we’re going to enjoy our “bountiful” harvest of (pea)nuts.
