Garden and tomato season starting!

AAANNNDDD, winter colds are finally over for this year. And we had quite a cold winter, it got down to -19°C. Oh the ice and snow, and I couldn’t go skiing. ccccc …. So, let’s start our garden season. The daffodils and tulips I planted in autumn are sprouting and will soon be in full bloom.

Vegetables sown in Februrary

Believe it or not, there are some things to sow in february:

  1. Carrots – cosmic purple
  2. Radishes – ice candles (Candela di Ghiaco)
  3. Fava Beans – we simply love those, paired in stew with bacon 😛
  4. Rainbow Swiss chard

I sowed them directly on the patio. Fava beans need to be sown in cold earth, and the rest enjoy a bit of cold as well. I can’t wait to start munching on those.

I also sowed some rocket, but we ate it all. The rocket microgreens were too tasty not to eat.

Starting Tomatoes

What I also did this February was start my tomatoes. Since we have an urban patio garden, our micro climate is a bit different then on the outskirts of the city, and that means it’s warmer. So logically our tomato season should start a bit earlier. I order again from http://www.tomato-seeds.eu this year, since I was thrilled with their seeds when I ordered them last time.

The tomatos I ordered are:

  1. White cherry
  2. Golden nugget
  3. Tomatillo verde – cousin to tomato
  4. St. Pierre – got this one as a thank you 🙂

Well, tomatillo is not a tomato, but it’s from the same store and it’s related to them. This is my first year of trying them out. I hope to make some delicious salsa for tacos this year. And Tomatillos and White cherry are already sprouting, so they should be here in no time (read few more months).

I also ordered chillis from the sister shop http://www.pepperseeds.eu and my jalapenos are already starting to sprout!.

Ordered peppers are :

  1. Jalapeno
  2. Habanero Orange
  3. Patio Red Skin F1

Jalapenos I ordered before, and they were delicious. I even made a little preserve of jalapenos, that we use on tacos and nachos. Habanero and Patio Red Skin are new to me. I’m not sure how my hubby will cope with habanero heat, but hopefully he will like it at the end.
And Patio skin should be nice big red sweet pepper that we’ll all enjoy (stuffed peppers in tomato sauce here we come). I can’t wait for all of them to friut 🙂 .

Cheers 🙂
